TRENT Summer School 2022 on Lake Environment and Ecology

 


The First TRENT Summer School 2022

The First TRENT Summer School has been successfully held in virtual format from 18. July to 1. August 2022. This Summer school was hosted by TRENT, KIT and Jiangnan University, and jointly co-organized by Suzhou University of Science and Technology (SUST), Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NJUST), Nanjing Tech University, Hohai University (HHU), Tongji University, DFIU (French-German Institute for Environmental Research) and GRACE (Graduate School of the Centre for Climate and Environment).


The topic of this Summer School was “Lake Environment and Ecology”. In total 31 enrolled master/doctoral students and 15 guest students from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, University of Koblenz Landau, Jiangnan University, Suzhou University of Science and Technology, Nanjing University of Technology, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Hohai University, Tongji University and other universities in China and Germany completed the summer school study.


The Summer School is rich in courses (please see agenda). In total 11 professional course lectures and 4 cultural exchange lectures were given by German and Chinese experts, as well as students grouping together for student´ Seminar. The lectures covered topics such as online water quality monitoring system, water microbiology, German and EU water management policies, water environmental toxicology, application of remote sensing technology in surface water analysis, sediment nutrients, microbial ecology of rivers and lakes, constructed wetlands, cyanobacterial bloom mechanism and control strategy, lake algal bloom resource utilization, practice and thinking of cyanobacteria management in Taihu Lake, etc. The whole lectures program enriched and promoted the participants´ professional knowledge in the field of water environment and ecology. The First TRENT Summer School mainly carried out joint summer teaching in the fields of environmental science and engineering. In the future, the partners in Germany and China will continue to promote the organization of the TRENT summer school, strengthen the exchange, for joint training of talents in environmental disciplines. Furthermore, on the TRENT platform, both sides will take this opportunity to communicate closely and integrate in depth to promote the connection and cooperation of technical research in environmental fields and achieve win-win development.


TRENT Summer School

The TRENT Summer School provides intercultural education for master and PhD students for environmentally sustainable development relative to human activity. The cross-border format enables future generations to find solutions to global environmental challenges. Contributing to the basic science principles and research case studies as well as culture exchanges enables students to broaden their horizons, improve their language proficiency, and enhance their intercultural competencies at an early stage. The program is coordinated by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany) as part of TRENT’s education outreach activities.

Very few educational exchanges are carried out between Germany and China under the current COVID-19 pandemic situation. In order to nonetheless promote more activities between experts and students in Germany and China, the TRENT summer school takes place in 18-22. July 2022 and addresses different elements of the entire lake ecological system, from sedimentary, surface water, ecotoxicology, as well as water policies in both countries. Throughout the lectures and workshops, students learn and experience relevant theoretical background and specific application perspectives for each of the topics.
The particular research topics in the lake sciences will be taught by scientific experts from Germany and China, who have rich research experiences in the Taihu Lake area. In addition, the civil society and politics in the area of water system in Germany and China will be introduced by invited experts.
Requirements:
  • Good command of English (Summer School will be held in English)
  • Environmental studies related major
  • Commitment to participate in the entire program
  • Interest in Sino-German cooperation and cultural exchange
How to apply
Places in the Summer School are limited to 30 participants, who will get a certification of participation this summer school issued by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Jiangnan University (JNU). The application deadline is 10. Juli 2022.
